One of the many legends of the Medicine Wheel

The legend says that to the north on the medicine wheel is found wisdom. The color for wisdom is white and the medicine animal is the buffalo. The south is represented by the mouse, the color is green. The south is a place for innocence, trust and for perceiving closely things of nature and of the heart. The west is the bear. The color is black and is a point of the introspective nature of mankind. The east is marked by the eagle. A point of illumination where all things are seen far and wide. Also, very clearly the east is the color of gold or yellow for the morning star. We are each given a particular point, at birth, on the great wheel which guides our life. But we must strive to gain knowledge and wisdom from all points to become a whole person.

One of the many legends of the Dream Catcher

Legend has it that grandmother Spider sang the universe into existence, but was saddened by the bad dreams of her human children. She went to the Willow Tree and asked him for some of his branches. She then went to the Eagle and asked him for his powerful feathers. She then bent the branches into a circle to connect all points and people of the world. Then she spun her web of wisdom around the branches to catch her children's bad dreams. Grandfather Sun's morning rays burned away the bad dreams that were tangled in the web. Any that were left turned into dew and trickled down the eagle feather and were given back to Mother Earth.

The Legend of the Corn Bead

The Corn Bead is so named due to its resemblance to a kernel of corn. It grows wild locally and has a naturally occurring hole in the center of it. Legend says that many years ago, during the 1830's, the Real People, as the Cherokee called themselves, were rounded up as cattle, force to leave their homeland and walk west to a new homeland. They cried tears of sorrow and grief. Where their tears hit the ground a plant sprang up. The seeds look like teardrops and were the color of grief. The Real People wear these seeds in necklaces and medallions in memory of the Trail of Tears.
